Migrating from Server to the Cloud

Overview

A.M Nomikos Transworld Maritime Agencies S.A, is one of Greece’s largest and historic shipping companies, with more than 1,000 personnel worldwide, on land and sea based operations. The company had been hosting its entire Jira infrastructure on-premise, for some years now.

The Challenge

Back in October 2020, Atlassian announced that support for its server product ends by February 2024, meaning that the server-based version of its flagship Jira product will reach its end of life, and Atlassian would no longer sell nor support it. To stay supported and benefit from continued innovation, Atlassian customers would need to migrate to the Atlassian Cloud solution.

This was an existential threat to a respected shipping company like A.M. Nomikos. They relied on Jira, using a server in their headquarters, and could not stay unsupported, without benefiting from new feature releases.

So before time ran out, they turned to Nimaworks to make use of our Atlassian expertise. Nomikos opted to migrate to the cloud offering, in order to benefit from reduced IT infrastructure costs, high scalability, flexibility, and increased security.

The Solution

The Nomikos migration journey which began in May 2022 was completed by our team on July 1st of the same year, in just over a month! During this short period, our team of cloud migration experts carefully planned every step of the cloud migration, while staying in close collaboration with the customer through a detailed plan. They conducted all the necessary assessments & pre-migration checks, successfully going through a user base clean up, set up a clone of on-prem production environment in order to test the migration. They came up with the right migration strategy and timeline, and got everything prepared for the move.

Once everything was finely prepared, they started testing and resolving any issues that could potentially pose a threat to the whole process. And after all the tests, it was time to proceed with the migration! Our team set up a cloud instance, proceeded with the UAT and finally migrated.

Of course like in all migrations we did face minor challenges, solving them seamlessly like always. As Nomikos was using Insight app synced with Active Directory, Nimawork’s team of cloud experts used "Atlassian Access" & "Azure AD Attributes Sync" applications as a bridge between their identity provider and Atlassian Cloud, to offer user authentication, provisioning and approval functionality in a seamless way.

The Impact

On the 1st of July, Nomikos shutdown completely the server instance, with its 10 agents and 250+ customers making the move to the cloud. In the short term, A.M. Nomikos will face absolutely no operational disruption once Atlassian ends support for its server product. In the longer-term, however, our client will enjoy multiple benefits from the successful Jira on cloud migration:

  • Security improvement.
  • System update automation: the company will always have, and be running, the latest version.
  • Reliability improvement: the cloud-based infrastructure is far more robust.
  • Platform scalability: new Jira projects and other Atlassian products can be created with a simple click of a button.
  • Cost-efficiency: since the new system is SaaS-based (software-as-a-service), A.M. Nomikos only pays based on its registered number of users, with no upfront costs.
